From Cosmetologist to Certified Trichologist | My Journey
Six months ago I took a big step in my career. I added certified trichologist to my cosmetology title. For most of my career I have focused on helping people feel confident through haircutting, coloring, and styling, and as a cosmetology instructor. But when I went through my own scalp and hair health challenges, I realized I was not alone in being totally lost. So, I enrolled in a trichology certification course and learned that there was a whole other world of hair and scalp health of which I had only scratched the surface as a cosmetologist.
What I’ve Known as a Cosmetologist
As a stylist my role has been to make hair look its best and make people feel good. I have worked with products and techniques that improve shine, softness, and style, and a few products that are branded to help clients on a macro level. Although I did learn the basics of hair and scalp conditions, I was not trained to understand why someone might have persistent dandruff, thinning hair, or chronic scalp irritation on a deeper level. If a client came in worried about hair loss, I could suggest a gentle shampoo or trending supplement, but I could not identify the root cause of the problem.
What Changed When I Became a Trichologist
Trichology training opened my eyes to how deeply connected the scalp and hair are to the body as a whole. I studied how stress, hormones, nutrition, and even gut health influence hair growth. I’ve learned how to recognize the differences between types of alopecia, as well as scalp disorders like seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. Today, when a client books a scalp analysis, I look far beyond the surface to understand what is happening beneath the skin and inside the body. We go through their medical history to look for red flags and in some cases, I review my clients’ blood work to identify the underlying causes of hair loss or scalp imbalances.
How My Approach Has Grown
The way I work with clients as a trichologist is very different from before. I ask questions about diet, lifestyle, stress levels, and medical history. Sometimes the best approach is a topical scalp treatment or targeted product recommendation. Sometimes we talk about benefits of red light therapies. Other times we talk about nutritional support, stress management strategies, or a referral to a specific medical provider with a full list of questions so you don’t feel lost as soon as you sit down in their office.
My role is not just to improve the appearance of hair but to uncover the cause of the issue, support you throughout your journey, and create a personalized plan for long-term results.
A Truly Holistic Approach
What excites me most is taking a blended approach to your hair and scalp health. I value the proven science of Western medicine such as low level light therapy, topical solutions, appropriate supplements and medications, while also incorporating holistic practices like stress reduction, mindfulness, and herbal scalp treatments. This combination allows me to address both the physical and emotional aspects of hair and scalp health.
Why This Matters for You
If you are experiencing excessive shedding, itchy or oily scalp, or noticeable thinning, I know how stressful and discouraging it can feel. Healthy hair is more than cosmetic, it is often a reflection of overall wellness. As a trichologist, my goal is to guide you toward answers and solutions that restore balance and confidence. Each client teaches me something new, and I continue to learn and grow with every consultation.
Your hair deserves more than a quick fix. A certified trichologist can help you understand what is happening, suggest the right medical support for your needs, and create a care plan that encompasses both scalp health and whole body wellness.
